Course Level

Good for beginners, but even better if you already some professional experience as a musician, event organiser, or in management.

Requirements

The course is meant for beginners so there are no strict requirements to attend. Ideally you should already be familiar with the concepts of Intellectual Property, Copyright, royalties collection and collection societies (such as PRS in the UK and BMI / ASCAP in the United States).

Content and Outcome

The course consists of five daily sessions:

Day 1: Record Labels, and Labels Services
Understand how record companies operate, what they do for artists and where they make their profit. Important knowledge whether you are looking for a record deal, or to start your own label.
Day 2: Publishing, Licensing, Synchronisation deals
The importance of publishing, what publishers do, alternatives to publishing deals, and how to get music used for films, television, videogames.
Day 3: Managers and Management Companies
Learn the difference between artist management and management companies, how to become a manager or how to find a good one. Includes Live Music and information about the kind of deals you could be offered.
Day 4: Marketing and Promotion
Understand how to make the most of a small budget to promote your music and name, which tools are available and how they can be used effectively, learn from case studies to see how other established artist build and maintain their fanbase.
Day 5: Mentoring Session
Pitching and feedback session. Beyond the general theory, the last day of the course offers the opportunity to apply all this knowledge to Your music and career.

By the end of this course you will have a better picture of the music industry and how different professional figures fit in to it. You will have cleared doubts and learned things you didn't know. More importantly, you will have a much better idea of what it takes to start your career in the business of music.


Steve Melhuish

This course is developed and led by Steve Melhuish. Steve's experience with Music Business started in the late '60s managing the first Virgin Records shop with Richard Branson; since then he has been involved in a variety of music enterprises and teaching roles, establishing a record company and leading University courses before establishing his own Music Business School.
